Gau Shala – A Sanctuary of Compassion and Care for Cows
Serving the Sacred Since 2011 | CARD, Boudh, Odisha
At the heart of India's rural culture lies a deep reverence for cows — not just as animals, but as sacred beings, symbols of nourishment, and partners in agricultural prosperity. Recognizing their significance and the growing need for protection, CARD (Center for Agriculture and Rural Development) established its Gau Shala (Cow Shelter) in 2011 in Boudh, Odisha.
Since then, our Gau Shala has become a haven for abandoned, injured, sick, and aged cows, providing them with shelter, food, medical care, and unconditional love.
Our Mission
To rescue, protect, and care for cows in need, while promoting ethical treatment of animals, sustainable agriculture, and awareness about the spiritual and ecological importance of cow welfare in rural communities.
Why Our Gau Shala Matters
With increasing urbanization, mechanization of agriculture, and economic pressures, thousands of cows are left abandoned once they stop producing milk or become injured. Many roam the streets, suffer malnutrition, or fall victim to accidents and cruelty.
The CARD Gau Shala was created as a compassionate response to this crisis — offering a safe, clean, and dignified environment where cows can live peacefully and be cared for with love.
What We Offer at CARD Gau Shala
🐄 Shelter & Protection
A spacious, hygienic, and secure cow shelter facility that protects cows from weather, hunger, injury, and neglect.
🌾 Nutritious Feed & Clean Water
Cows are fed a balanced diet including grass, fodder, and supplements. Fresh drinking water is available at all times to maintain their health and hydration.
🩺 Veterinary Care & Regular Health Checkups
We ensure timely medical attention, vaccinations, and care for sick or injured cows. Local veterinarians visit regularly to monitor their well-being.
🧘♂️ Peaceful Environment
Our Gau Shala is not just a shelter; it is a place of spiritual peace, where visitors often come for blessings, meditation, and service (Seva).
♻️ Sustainable Practices
We use cow dung and urine for producing organic compost, bio-pesticides, and other eco-friendly products — supporting sustainable farming and reducing chemical dependency.
